Hi. I had an 86 900S for 14 years and loved the car. I've recently purchased a 95 900 SE from a friend. There are things I both like and dislike. Probably the worst thing about the car is the clutch. They went back to a cable clutch for a few years of the NG 900. I understand they came out with a hydraulic clutch in the 98 model.
My 95 is a stick as was my 86, and they definitely have a different feel. The old c900 had a great 2nd to 3rd gear shift as it felt like the shifter sprung into 3rd from second. I don't feel that in the newer 900, but it's much easier to get the car into 1st gear. The shift lever itself is shorter than in the older model, and it feels like there's a shorter throw in the shifter.
I really miss the side door pockets. The newer one feels like there's no space to put things, but I must say the seats in the newer car are way more comfortable than in my old one.
Lastly, the newer car has a more cushy ride as the other (older model felt more like a "machine". Whether that's better or worse is a matter of personal preference.
Good luck with your decision.
By the way, I vote for the turbo 4 cylinder over the 6 cylinder. The car hauls ass!!
