My experience starting from the '77 99 to my current '96 900SET includes an '85 900T in the middle. I thought the 99 had the best 'shift quality' for a manual gearbox. It was a 4-speed, hydraulic. I sold it at 110k [miles]. The 900T was a 5-speed, basically the same as the 4-speed 99 with overdrive 5th added. The 5-speed shift quality is considered 'notchy' by the media and I tend to agree. I sold it at 180k [from 85k] and it suffered from intermittant stubborn 1st for a long time - requiring either double clutch or slipping into 2nd before moving into 1st. My younger daughter learned how to use a manual transmission with this car and I told her she could drive anything if she'd learn to use this one. She now drives a 5 speed Mazda. I changed the clutch pack at ~140k, but it still grabbed. Probably because I didn't re-face the flywheel, although a straightedge showed no obvious distortion. I've considered using the much-discussed Red Line MTL, but never did it.
The '96 is a more recent buy, but it's also a 5 speed [cable]. 'Rubbery' is the word that comes to mind. Based on the comments on this board, I've already bought a spare cable and dreading changing the clutch. At its current 100k mileage, there's no apparent problems with its 5-speed.
Ride quality of the '96 900SET is more isolated, especially in the engine sound department. Sometimes I have to deliberately check to see what gear I'm in to discover that I should upshift. It's a combination of the quieter balance-shafted 4 cylinder and sound insulation. This can be considered more 'refined' some circles, although others would call it less 'sporting.' With the C900T or 99, I used my ears when change gears.
