The model year and date of registration are two separate things. I agree about the clutch cable, which was in production till 97.5 model year. Your VIN should will indicate the model year. The owners manuals in N. America have a section which shows how the VIN code breaks down, as least thats the way that it was early on.
I would change it out at TG suggested. It is expensive stuff, but so is the pump. But you should have the source of the fluid loss checked out. The pump an and hoses have some high pressure fittings that should be trouble free, but the low pressure side of the pump, and perhaps at the reservoir, you might find some basic hose clamps that could need tighening up, on the low pressure side. In any case, where ever the fluid is leaking, I would expect to see the leak causing an accumulation of dirt at the leak and it should be easy to find.
But if you have the cable clutch, there remains some issue about what fluid you really need. So first of all, get that resolved. I thought that there was something on the reservoir or elsewhere that specified if the green PS fluid was required. So something to check out before you do anything else.
