Yes, you increase boost until you get fuel cuts, then back off until you don't. Note that this procedure is the same if you have a boost guage or not and having a boost guage will not change your end point.
The ECU takes care of the mixture. The ECU makes the mixture richer as boost in increased. My Saab has visable exhaust when on boost. All the turbos get soot deposits at the exhaust tip. Is this rich enought for you?
The turbo does not care about the heat. You are on boost only for brief moments.
The CEL's that were read are interesting. The ECU notes the fuel cuts, but I don't think ever throws a cel for that alone. Misfiring... could be a number of causes, DI or plug problems. We did not get a report about the plugs. At higher boost, the voltage required to break down the spark plug gap increases. So higher boost will uncover problems with the DI and/or plugs. I think that this is the first time that this has been an issue. The MBC did not create a problem but created the conditions where the preexisting problem become evident.
So when I go onn about plugs and injectors... there is a reason.
