A few things:
1. You must understand that neither your Montero or your Accord were high performance cars, thus they don't suffer much abuse (see #3!). The Saab has a pretty high output engine in a small package.
2. ALL manual transmissons are easily damaged by abuse, especially when lots of turbo-generatd torque is available. Try ramming a WOT 911TT (with a magnificent Getrag 6spd trans, I might add) from third into second at 60mph with the clutch half engaged. CRUNCH!!! Maybe pull it out of gear a few times at 5000rpm without using that pesky clutch. Repeat 10 times and 50k miles later those crunches might just play out into a broken tranny.
3. Used cars often receive tremendous abuse at the hands of the dealer, and of course by their previous owner. Case in point: When I detailed cars at a Honda dealer, the salespeople were allowed to occasionally take used cars out to lunch. The cars they chose were always the nicest and most unique cars on the lot. Those salespeople did things to those cars that I thought were impossible due the laws of physics. The MANAGER (yes, the guy in a suit in the sales tower) of the used lot drove a nice MR2 in a tight circle at full throttle until it went up on 2 wheels!
It is usually crazy to lease a new car, a used lease is insane--especially a unique, used hi-po car with no warranty. A nasty lesson to learn I guess.
