7ES's will work fine, they just don't stay very clean.
The problem is probably not occuring in 1st gear because it is boost reduced and does not get to where the problem occurs.
If there was a fueling problem, then there would be a loss of power, and lean burn. The DI would detect knocking conditions and cut boost.
Try this. We want to duplicate the fuel delivery problem but not while on boost. So if you loose power at boost at 3000 rpm, with around 10 psi of boost, then at 3000 rpm times 24/14 rpm, you calculate it, the you should hit a wall at zero boost. So you will be looking to see if you can duplicate a high fuel delivery under non boost condtions which will hit the wall, and the ECU will not cut boost beecause you are not on boost. So you will have to drive at higher speeds, with non boost acceleration. Perhaps a long up hill drive would be useful. So see if you can find a non-boost fuel delivery at some RPMs where you can go no faster. This would provide some further evidence of a fuel delivery problem. I had a Volvo 260 which would not go faster than around 80. Dealer says fuel pump and installs, problem fixed. So there is my line of thinking, but could be something else as well.
