I just want to thank the contributors to the board for getting me off on the right foot with my 900SE V6 Cvt 64K Automatic. I confess not doing any research before buying the car other than making sure ALL services were done including 65k, Carfax - one owner. (I spoke to two service managers in Kansas City where the car came from to make sure). My father-in-law had a '78 which I recalled driving and enjoying. Although his car was "quirky" (the engine was pulled once in order to replace the windshield wiper motor) I assumed Saab had made progress re those kinds of issues - when I replaced the cabin filter I was proved correct! I know, the timing belt might fall in this category but I'm trying to be gracious.
The board helped in solving the following issues:
Steering wheel vibration: Found Hunter Balancer & Vibration machine and found two wheels with lateral runout of .118 and .065(at the rim) - Replaced both and now car is vibration free.
Convertible rear window seal: The exterior seal was detached all around the window except for about 3" on top. I used the "Goop treatment" and you'd need a hammer to get the window out now.
Had dealer run a warranty check and the top had recieved the upgrade in 1996, also, the front end suspension was upgraded as well.
Wsher pump, epoxy kit for defroster grid, spotted the rust on the liftgate (dealer is investigating whether it is a perforation warranty issue), idler pullies and serpentine belt checked, cleaning balky antenna mast, checking battery water level, etc. I've read about changing plugs and other maintenance items which I plan on doing in the future. A dealer did the pullies, 1st ATF change, a torn window seal, washer pump as I wanted to establish a relationship and they were good enough to check the warranty items - plus on a DIY scale with 10 being Anders I'm about a 3.5.
I had the first of 4 ATF changes done elsewhere but I did the last two myself and now the transmission shifts beautifully.
I plan on switching to Mobil 1 or Amsoil 10w-30 when I change the oil.
When I first found this sight I became paranoid that I had made an error in buying the car but after about a week of reading stuff I remembered some medical books I used to have when I had horses. Some of the ailments pictured in the books would make you never want to own a horse as they were pretty gruesome; the point being odds are your horse won't suffer but a few minor things and one should read about ailments with a sober and clear mind so as not to develope ulcers of one's own. So in that spirit I will continue to read here and perhaps have something to contribute in the future and to cruise top down with Radiohead on the CD player (Unless anyone has a better CD in mind). Thanks again.
