1997 SE: check engine light

My check engine light went on about a month ago. Took it to dealer, spent $70 to find out that code (P0340) means cam position sensor problem and I don't have one of those. They reset it. A week ago it came on again, took it in again, same code. They admit no idea what problem is but checked on the Saab information network (?) and have a plan. They want to sell me a $500 DI unit that I can "try" for 30 days. If light doesn't come on again, we'll assume problem fixed and I pay the $500. If it does, they'll take that out and install $750.00 part. Problem is, the light went off before I took it in. So if it doesn't come on again, we'll all assume that DI unit solved the problem. I'd rather wait to see if it comes on a 3rd time and then install the DI unit to see if it makes it go away. That way I'll know its working, not just luck. Any ideas? I read some of the check engine posts and it seems that this is a common problem. By the way, both days it came on were really hot (90+) and I was doing a lot of stopping/starting/airconditioning. Thanks for any suggestions/wisdom.
