The ECU is brain dead about many minor things, this would be one of them.

The ECU is adapting and calibrating all of the time. The notion that that a reset of this nature is needed is probably more urban legend than anything else.

Sometimes there is a severe problem, the ECU will go unto limp home mode and needs a reset to get it go go back to an adaptive life style. This happened to me with a split vac line to the map sensor and adaptive mixture control became impossible, so it went to limp home mode and threw an adaption fault CEL. It was resistant to Tech-II fauld clearing and the ECU required a hard power down. A major O2 sensor problem could cause this too. Some adaption faults are soft, some are hard. A soft adaption fault can occur when the injector duty cycle is starting to go outside of normal bounds for a given operating condition. Adaption is still working ok, but the ECU has to guard against larger injection duty cycles at lower power demands as this can logically indicate a state where the duty cycles will be impossible as high power outputs. At this point, there could be an adaption fault CEL and the vehicle will run quite well under most conditions. This could be caused by O2 sensor problems, a really bad fuel injector or low fuel pressure. Many ECU's are quite aware of major faults. The fault codes can indicate a sensor out of bounds, or an open circuit or a shorted circuit to the sensor, as least with ODB-II, 1996+ production.

So in your case, the BPV was defective and boost was a bit low. But the ECU just maps fuel to the availble computed air flow. Sometimes higher, sometimes lower. That is business as usual for the T5.
