I test drove about 15(!) different '99 + '00 9-3 convertibles, 3 of those were SE models. I test drove 2 98 900SEs. (Plus a few beemers, a volvo and a *cough* cabrio) I really couldn't tell the difference between the S and SE 9-3 really, except the "S" ones seemed "cheap" on the inside, no auto climate control, no woodgrain stuff on the inside. My husband was all like: "This one looks a lot like the last one". I felt that the clutch in the 9-3s were all "mushier" than the '98 I ended up buying. It may have just been whomever broke the car in, but I thought the '98 shifted smoother and it didn't seem any less powerful. I did think that the '98 had poorer handling, until I realized that the front tires were near bald and the '99 had newer tires. I do have to admit that I like the 9-3 single latch for the roof, its smoother and more quiet and the in-dash cupholder is nice.
I debated between a particular '99 9-3 SE and my '98 900SE and considering that there was a 6k price difference between the 2 (and the '99 had 10K more miles!) I opted for the '98 and now I get to ramble on this board instead of the 9-3 board. Aren't you all so lucky?
