Thanks for the larger picture.
The belt leaves the idler on the tension to travel to the power steering pump. So the higher sidewalls many not be needed to tame any lashing of that longer run. And the distance to the alternator is not changed to any degree. So I cannot see an issue with the belt wanting to jump the pully in this config. But I understand your caution! These pullies are probably used on lots of different vehicles other than Saabs. So the reasons for the higher side wall may be un-related to the Saab application. Perhaps there was a need for higher walls in another vehicle application, or it was someone's idea for basic improvement, or perhaps there were a few problems in engine build up, somewhere, where the belts were sometimes put on that pully with the 6 rib belt being off by a rib or two. With the higher side wall, the fitting of the belt might be a bit more idiot proof, or allow for faster and easier fitting. On some applications, this pully, or others of the ribbed family, may be located in difficult or blind positions for engine build up, or service in the field. Hard to know. But if the belt is installed correctly, then the ribs them selves present lots of 'retention wall security' already, 6 of them. So I am comfortable with this change to my Saab.
I know that one cannot just use the 9-3 belt, I tried that!
