Could be a displaced exhaust shield. Under power the engine and exhaust deflects in its mounts. There have been some reports of mounts with problems. My RH mount has sagged a bit.

Your model originally came with a solid cat support at the back of the engine. All of these do fail by cracking. There is a rubber suspension replacement. If you have the old solid one and it is cracked, the it could make some noise.

How does the engine sound at idle with the hood up?
