Outside Mirror rattle and high blood pressure

Just cost myself $125.00 for a new used outside mirror from Goldwing but I'd like to know where I went wrong. The mirror rattled when I shut the door so I figured there was a chance something was loose. I researched the site and found that prying the mirror glass off of the motor would result in the defroster wires exposed which you would disconnect to free the glass. I pried off the glass with a metal spatula and rag and it only came 2/3 off. I cont'd and got it off but in the process the head of the nylon "belt" broke off where it attaches to the "snap ring". Apparantly the snap ring came free from its' attachment with the motor? Once free I could detach the snap ring from the mirror by releasing tension from the tabs and levering the ring free by going around to the four or so tabs. Was it normal for the ring to come free as it did or was it supposed to detach from the mirror glass when I initially attempted to pry it off? When I put it back together abscent one contol for direction the mirror does not want to stay secure in the housing and is easily loosened. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
