The owners manual for my 1998 900SET says to change the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) every 65,000 miles with Dexron III ATF. But keep in mind that the typical 'open the transmission case and drain the fluid' automatic transmission service actually only changes about 3.5 qts. of the 7 qts. in the system. The rest of the ATF is hiding in the torque converter and transmission cooler lines. So you are really only changing half the ATF.
Because of this and the fact that I want to keep the car for a 200,000+ miles, I change the ATF with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF (meets Dexron III requirements) every 30,000 miles. Another option would be to have the automatic transmission flushed and install all new ATF every 65,000 miles.
Either way the extra cost of more frequent ATF changes and better ATF should pay off by not having to rebuild/replace the automatic transmission.
