I am planning on replacing all dampers in my 1998 900S 2.3 5-door this weekend.
I need a few finer details from the people who have done this.
I obtained some of the minor parts that go into the suspension.
In particular, I got the rubber spring spacers that support the front springs at the top. The new parts look *terrible*, even though the rubber seems pliable and there are no structural cracks. It looks all dried up, covered with a mesh of surface cracks. Has anyone else replaced these? Are they supposed to look like that? They look like they have been sitting outside for 5 years... They were also the most expensive pieces out of all that I got :(
I got some rubber bushings: rear upper shock bushings, front anti-roll bar bushings. Is all this rubber supposed to be lubricated in any way? Wurth rubber protectant, perhaps? Or glycerin? Or some special grease? Soap water? Vaseline? AllData manual mentions Molycote 33 for anti-roll bar bushes. What's that? Is there a commonly available alternative? I am looking to eliminate any possible noises from the suspension. Currently I get pretty severe creaking noise when going over bumps in cold weather. I am guessing that is due to my strut mounts, so I bought those too. KYB from Tire Rack, "Made in India." :-\
I also got the lower spring spacers, which are, strangely, metal. Aluminium alloy, by the looks of it.
Another question: why do the instructions say to remove brake disks and backing plates? It seems like it should be possible to remove the strut with the brake disk still attached. All you have to do is remove the caliper and the ABS wheel sensor. Is it really necessary to remove the brake disk/rotor and backing plate?
Do I need to prime the new dampers by moving their shafts up and down? Do the front struts require oil in the housing? 50cc, right? What oil should I use? Regular motor oil, synthetic, etc? Or maybe antifreeze?
I appreciate any tips, etc. Thanks a million!
