Hi Tom,
Yup its going to be a Linux box. I haven't decided on the spec yet but I sorted the LCD bit and the sound problem.
I’ve been considering buying a LCD screen for some time but I’ve always been put off because there’s nowhere to fit it and even if I did fit it on the top of the dash it’d only get stolen.
While browsing EBay I found a pre-built LCD-come-sun visor from Hong Kong. Using the dimensions given on the bid page, I checked them against the space available in the 900 and found that it’d probably fit. Sure enough, it fits, not perfect but stows away just fine.
The age old “I’ve got no AUX socket” problem: Use a FM modulator. Its sits in between the aerial and the radio, drawing a small current from any switched power (Hence one of the questions). It has stereo line-in in the form of two phono sockets with 3-way switch to alter which frequency it’ll run on. You then store that frequency in the Clarion’s memory so that you can recall it at any time.
As all my kit will be in the boot I decided to fit the FM modulator at the aerial end. The aerial has the male plug fitted right on it and the FM modulator fits straight in line. The sound quality won’t be as great as a proper line in and I’m not sure how it would compare with a tape adapter. I didn’t want anything in the cabin of the car, except the screen, which can be stowed away, to be on show for nasty criminals to nick. There are plenty of places to get them in the States and I found a few places in the UK to buy mine (Although I’ve heard they’re illegal?).
I’ve been taking photo’s so far(when I remember to), so when its done I’ll put a link up for anyone who’s interested.
Thanks for the info on the interior light. I’d though about it and then rubbished that because I thought it’d be positive switched. So if it’s negatively switched by the boot switch I’m sorted.
I’m still trying to get my hands on a DC-DC converter to power the box, as an inverter sounds like a ‘dirty’ way of doing it.
BTW I’m a little ambitious, the project will hopefully do something like this:
http://www.dashpc.com/
In short: MP3, DVD, Sat Nav, TV, ODBII stats. Ooo, and Kit from Nightrider me thinks too.
