Randy, I have the 2.3 NA and I removed my chain because it was very noisy. I have seen other 4 cylinder engines run just fine without there balance shafts and so was not concerned about vibration. Probably the main reason I removed the chain though other than being cheap(I like to call it thrifty) is I hate to have something that could cause catastrophic failure if it lets go. If it doesn't really have to be there. I look at it alot like the guy who takes off his smog equipment on his muscle car,not really necessary and could fail and cause trouble.
But to answer your question no it was not hard at all. It is about a 5-6 hour job if your well equiped,air tools jacks etc.. You drop the motor while still attatched to the subframe. Basically you remove the front motor mounts and the subframe as well as the exhaust hangers. The right front wheel,splash guards,battery,water pump, and alternator. This is done so you can drop the motor down enough to get at the cover. I say it is easy assuming you know your way around engines well. Otherwise you could end up with an immoble car and lots of parts.
Oh and no info on the BB I looked.
