I replaced the rear rotors and fixed the sticking emergency brake (by greasing the mechanism liberally) last August. At this time, the emergency brake shoes were worn down to approx. 1-2mm (minimum thickness). Since then, everything has been fine. The first day we had temperatures below 0 deg. C, I jumped in the car to find that the emergency brake was stuck on (upon pulling away it felt like someone had placed a brick in front of each wheel - i.e. the brakes were on tight). After driving it for 20-30m it had freed itself - which had me thinking that the friction heat had enabled the frozen (?) shoes to release. This morning - exactly the same thing.
My first winter with the car (last year), I had no problems like this (other than the emergency brake being on partially, due to poorly lubricated mechanism).
Anyone got any thoughts??
