You need to remove the belt or slacken it and move it away from the crankshaft pully. With a cold engine start and run briefly, there will be no coolant circulation. If the engine is smooth and quiet, then you know its not the engine, but something belt driven.

Engine off, rotate the alternator wheel by hand. Feels smooth? Sounds quiet? Little drag? Any signs of axial or radial play when you pull on it. Repeat this procedure with the AC, PS and coolant pump. Check all 3 idler wheels for play, noise, dryness (spins too freely).

So try to isolate the probem your self. If it is the idler wheel above the crankshaft, do not replace, just use the GM belt which allows for you to route the belt so that pully is not used.

Time to DIY this and reduce your dependancy on mechanics telling you what the problem and the problem not getting fixed, that can be worse than the engine problem itself! You might not be able to fix the problem that you find, but you will feel a lot better knowing for your self where the problem is if you can narrow it down yourself.
