Your post has parallels with several previous posts. As with any car line there are bound to be "bad apples" that run more in repair cost than typical and everyone, no matter if it be a Japanese car, American car or European car.
I've owned my 1996 900SET for over 3 years and had several things replaces (belt, pulleys, DI, clutch and other items). My outlay has not yet come to $2000 in the past 3 years with no surprises. I'm now approaching 90K and do not expect any expenses over and above normal maintainance (tires, wiper blades, etc, etc). However, my modifications to the car for more power and better handling do exceed $2000, but this is something that was done for fun, not to keep the car running.
My advice to you is to find a reputable mechanic and have the work done there. I'm a little leary of the hourly rate that Saab gets and my mechanic was previously a Saab mechanic that went out on his own.
Do not let all the doom and gloom drive your decision. Many people seach this board out and post here when they have problems with there car for advice.
Happy Saabing
David M
