Oil at the filter, could be slop from the change?
All of the early years' rear oil seals failed. Yours must be renewed by now?
With your miles I think that you would like a 5W40. I switched from Mobil One in my 95SET (rip) , from Mobil One 10W30 and my engine was quieter and smoother and my MPGs went up by about 6%.
I was using Mobil Delval One, a true syntheic targeted at diesel engines but also gas engine rated SJ.
You don't have the clearances of a new engine. I think that you would like an xW40 oil.
Delvac is hard to get. Look up local Mobil distributors. It comes in one Gallon jugs and the unit is sale is a case of 4. If you have a CAT heavy equipment dealer, if they carry the CAT 5W40 diesel engine oil, its the Mobil Delvac product put in CAT containers by Mobil, often cheaper too. Expect to pay around $20US/gallon. Delvac has a much more rubust additive and package than Mobil One. Yes, a W40 can sometimes get you better fuel economy than a W30. Delvac is in some Canadian Walmarts in 4 liter jugs. So check that out. A Walmart closer to farming community is more likely. The jug will be a upright black run-o-mill container. The sexy US contains will not hold 4 liters eh!
Rotella 5W40 syntheic at Walmart would be good too, but perhaps not the fuel savings, but $$$ savings. The Diesel engine oil analysis freaks seem to like that one too. And Petro Canada (PC) Duron syntheic 5W40 is good too. But Delvac One is better. With these oils change your oil every 10M miles or longer. Purolator PureOne filters are great and affordable compared to Mobil One filters.
Don't get the Rottella 15W40, it is a dyno oil.
I have Delvac on hand for our Passat Diesel.
The new 9-5's come with Mobil One 0W40 as the factory fill. I am seriously thinking of using Delvac One is it...
I am from Ontario and have been in Kansas for 5.5 years. Why else... a gal :)
