Lots of T-stats in the fleet are not working right. They do not last forever. If you have a real old stat, just change it. There is goodness in that and if problems persist, you know that you eliminated the stat from the equation.
You could have a bad engine temperature sensor, but that is rare, stats do need replacing.
A colder reading suggests a stat that is not closing when it should, or stuck open. An engine that runs cool will get condensation, sludge and acids.
Cold engine, hood up, parkling brake on, start engine and turn on lights, rear window defrost etc to increase engine load a bit.
Feel the upper rad hose. It will be cold and should stay cold until the stat opens. So if the stat was good, it would open when the indicator got near 9 o'clock. If the hose slowly gets warm as the engine warms, the stat is open and is should not be. So thats how you tell.
To change the stat, search drs<underscore>install and find the cooling system posts.
