Good to hear that you can laugh about the whole thing. I have to admit that I was in a really bad mood for days when my engine died! :-)
Anyhow, I would have to think you have a fair chance of fighting the insurance company if you can prove that the previous owner followed the regular maintenace schedule. Check with the dealer if they have the history on the car. Most Saabs are maintained by Saab dealerships, so it may be in "the computer". The sludge does not prove that your car lacked maintenace since other people on this board have had sludge problems as well.
If the dealer can just replace the connecting rods and is willing to give you a 3 to 6 month warrenty on the engine, I would just have them fix it. However, changes are that poor lubrication may have damaged other parts such as the balance shaft chains and sprockets. All those bits are expensive, so a used engine may be a better option (should cost less than $2000 plus installation). A new engine block will be too expensive unless you get the insurance company to cough up the money. Let's know what the dealer tells you....
