also, what year is the car and how many total miles on it.
Ask the service manager to check with the factory rep if anything can be done. I would also suggest writing to Saab USA in Norcross, GA. The name I was given to contact there is Stephen Zoeller. Be polite, they are a lot more reasonable than other manufacturers. Go to Saab's website and click on "contact us" for the address.
When my timing sprocket failed I wrote to Saab and they picked up 2/3 of the repair bill as a "goodwill" gesture.
$9000 sounds like the worst case, the total in my case was ~$4800, my out of pocket was $1600. Heads are $1622 ea. short block is ~$4600.
If Saab won't help then have the car towed to an indy and look for a used engine at a junkyard.
