Ok, so it was the rearmost idler pulley which failed. I left a note detailing Dean's 'short belt' fix along with the correct belt to do it with - they didn't wanna do it that way and I'm not about to do it myself in this cold weather, SO... they did it the 'normal' way.

#1: Is this the pulley which most often fails?

#2: Saabtech (my indie mech) tells me they use a belt which is 10mm shorter than the standard Saab belt, thus a tighter / more secure fit. I don't really buy that a 10mm shorter belt would really improve things - wouldn't it just cause the belt tensioner to adjust a little?

#3: pictures (below) of the pulley which died. The black stuff in the grooves is really caked in/across there, I could not pry it out even with an excessive amount of effort.

Mainly I just wanted to post this stuff so everyone could see what can happen. Saabtech tells me they've done about 12 idler pulley per week this winter.
