...to get everyone into a 9-3. On what sound basis is this suggestion made? A 1999 9-3 might be the right choice for some, but it is probably not the right choice for those who start their car search looking into the NG900s. These people have decided two things: 1) they want a SAAB; and 2) they don’t want to spend a lot initially (maybe they want to avoid car payments and collision insurance). They are looking at the NG900 because the initial cost is less than the 9-3. Ed loves to quote the low-end price of 10K. But what does 10K get you? Probably something on the order of a 4 year old car with 65+K miles on the odometer. Great, an off-lease car, that is ready to incur some major service $$. These are the same cars that plagued the NG900 board when they came off lease. They can be much abused. Don’t over extend yourself economically thinking that you are ever going to get a SAAB that doesn’t cost real money in maintenance. So, you suggest a warranty will solve this problem? Well, they are another $1-2K and these companies are NOT in the business of saving you money. That much is for sure. Warranties don’t cover maintenance items such as brakes, tires, and oil changes. This hypothetical 9-3 will require inputs of $$...but the buyer overextended themselves getting into the 9-3 and they have little ‘car’ money left. And they could have gotten an NG for half the price. If you buy an NG intelligently, you can get a car that is well maintained and is ready to go…has leather, turbo, climate control, etc (maybe or maybe not a hydraulic clutch). All SAABS require one of two things: 1) lots of money, or 2) time and a little money. Don’t buy a SAAB without understanding this. If your economics are tight, learn to be a do-it-yourselfer. If you have $5K, go out and get a 1996 SET with 90K miles. That is a lot of car per dollar. Have a SAAB mechanic go over the car and then sit back and thumb through the $5-7 you just saved. Ed, despite this tirade devoted directly to you, I do love you like a brother!
