I ran into the same problem last year, top would make a grinding noise when going up, would have to help it by hand, until one day it just stopped all together (1/2 way up or down mind you). I employed the manual method to secure the top and started digging. I found much the same as you, lots of money for new mechanism, etc, etc. I ended up opening pulling the convertible top motor assembly out and looking it over. It appeared to have bent part of the frame that holds the motor in place against the gearbox which caused the motor gear to not completly engage the gears of the "transmission". I simply took a good crowbar, and "finely tuned" the frame so that everything meshed again, reinstalled the assembly and violla, I have a fully operation top again, without paying $1700 for new one. My suggestion, pull out the old assembly and look it over, might be able to do the same thing as I did and save you a ton of money. I would also guess that by installing the brace kit mentioned in this thread, it will stop it from happening again.
