Failure. Complete and total Failure. It is with a heavy heart that I pen these words, so perhaps others will learn and not suffer my humiliation.
I tried R/R the oil pan gasket, V6, this weekend. The directions say to drop the subframe, for which I do not have the proper tools, but it appeared there was enough clearance underneath to remove the pan without doing so. It turns out, the purpose in dropping the subframe is because you cannot remove the pan because the oil sump pipe (which cannot be seen, of course) is in the way; it comes down from the passenger side of the pan, and does not allow removal of a free pan. I am about 2 inches from success. Here's how I got where I am today:
Following the manual, remove the passenger wheel well liner. Also you will need to drop the exhaust header pipes (needs two new gaskets), which was not a problem save one rusted, apparently mismatched bolt which broke off. Remove the transmission cover (three bolts, very easy) which is a vertical piece of metal, alongside the driver's side of the pan. Remove the several oil pan bolts, I left two in to hold it up while I pried it loose. It took about 1/2 hour to pry the pan loose, using a utility knife, screwdriver, hammer, etc., if you have a hydraulic or air chisel-like tool it should be about 5 minutes.
I tried jacking up the engine to separate it from the sub-frame enough, no dice. A call to my fatherinlaw's mechanic reveals, "Oh, yeah, on the 900 you need to remove the subframe" There is no other way.
Replacement gasket is cork, the guy at Murray's recommended Permatex "Indian Head" sealant (it's like a shellac) for cork. That's where it stands today, oil pan and header pipes hanging in shame, waiting for the tow truck. Anyway, I'm trying a new mechanic which should cut costs.
Also while I had the wheel well cover off, I replaced the smooth/stationary idle pulley for the serpentine belt, which like the tensioner pulley was way out of grease, pretty straightforward, unscrew bolt, screw it back in, you have to attack it from an angle, so use a wobble drive or one of those sockets with the hinge for angles.
Next Project: saving for a new car.
