just drop it in or disassamble and check everything.
At least drop the oil pan on the new engine and remove the oil pump and reducer valve together with lifting the valve cover.
This way you get a fairly complete look of the status of the engine.
If you want to go even further, you have to lift the cyl head and remove timing cover and if you do that you should replace all guides and the balance chain plus tensioner.
