IAC on a 97 900 set (long)

I've read the posts.
I've studied what Dean has said.
So now I ask ... is the IAC attached to the throttle body or is it just a connector ... one of the filter-like things inbetween two hoses? Something I take a torx to or is it just held on by clips? Is it bigger than a bread box? Maybe just a big hammer will do the trick !
I'm trying to figure out the moaning from underneath the hood. It sounds like a cat is stuck inside ... actually embarrassing in a parking garage. The rpms hesitate around 1000 to 900. With a bit of gas it levels out and sounds like a nice hummmm. It's not noticeable driving but as soon as I come to a light it starts moaning again. I've changed the plugs; used Techron; changed the vac hoses.
I now ask the experts.
Thanks in advance - you guys all rock.
