What about switching from dino?

My 1996 900s 2.3 Non Turbo has been on dino since day one. It's up to 145,000 miles and I asked my indie once about switching, he said, best not to switch in his opinion since if the dino has filled the seals, then you don't want to flush it out with synth, causing seal leaks everywhere. Is this true, or should I switch to synth.
Or, if I should just stick with dino, then my real question: what rating of oil (i know NOTHING about what those numbers mean) should I use for the Portland/Seattle temperate and moderate climates, not hot, not cold (just wet :)
Thanks,
Tom.
