Switching from dino at high mileage .....

MAY be a problem. Your indie is right that you MAY have leaks by changing to synthetic on a higher mileage vehicel. It really depends on the amount of deposits and the condition of the engine seals.
Since you have a 2.3L normally aspirated engine, I would really be tempted to error on the side of caution and keep using a good quality regular oil with frequent changes (say 3-5,000 miles).
If you feel lucky then try a change to X-30 or X-40 synthetic oil, changing the oil and filter first at 1000-1500 miles, then routine oil and filter changes every 5,000 miles for mainly city driving or 10,000 miles for mainly highway driving.
