My first post--although I have lurked here occasionally. Back in March I bought (on eBay, for $3950) a 1994 900S. Bright red, 3-door, 109K miles, computer, the usual toys, but not turbo. Billed as being in "excellent condition" and when I went to pick it up I had absolutely no quarrel with that description. It has about 105K miles. Drove it from New Jersey to my home in Nebraska. Other than a couple of
minor glitches with cruise control and turn signals not cancelling it performed flawlessly. About a month later when I downshifted from 5th to 4th for a steep hill I hit reverse by mistake, with some
grinding. Discovered when I parked at home that I now have no reverse. I can shift into all the other gears just fine. The shift lever goes into where reverse used to be just fine (like when I park and take out the key)
Local Saab indie says that this problem is endemic with the early NG900, (and I see lots of posts on this board) and that the tranny probably needs rebuild/replacement, that it is not just a
linkage problem. (Also says he knows someone who has been driving one for a couple of years with no reverse.) I like the car, and it is my 4th Saab, having had a V4 station wagon back in the seventies, and a couple of 9000s a few years ago.
Questions are--should I spend another ~$2000 on this car, or should I bail out now, realizing that I am going to take a significant loss.
Also, what is an otherwise excellent but goes-forward-only 1994 Saab 900S worth? Of course any other suggestions would be appreciated.
