Let me add one thought: when I search the BB extensively on this problem, at least 1 other possibility came up. That was corroded grounds or wires elsewhere within the dash, I think near the fuse box. That was from someone that lived in Florida so you can imagine the humidity and salt water in the air causing some problems. If you want to see more on other alternatives, they might include links to my past posts in the October to December period. I also have some emails saved that I exchanged with others; email me privately for a copy of those.
I still think it's 99% likely that your cluster is going bad; you have identical symptoms to me, with the exception that some of my "outages" (when gauges when flat and dark) triggered the SRS light. Not all did, but sometimes they did.
