I am not saying the part is necessary brocken. I am saying that it can send the wrong data to the engine control unit because it may be warmed by the environment whereas the engine is still quite cold.
However, I was refering to the engine coolant sensor and not the air intake sensor. The good news are that the coolant sensor should actually be cheaper, i.e. not much more then 20 dollars.
Before changing them I would attempt to actually measure what signals they are sending to the engine management system.
The fact that your car starts well when you push it down the hill make me think that you may try to boost as much as you can your starting spark. So by checking the condition of the ignition system and impoving it you may have some more luck. Let us know if you have any success.
