Oh...
They look like this:
They come in two parts (lets call them part A, and part B). When together they look like >< , the left on being A, and the right being B. They pivot at the point. One end of A is a fork. It goes between the two parts you're trying to separate. The other end of A has a threaded hole. With me so far? Good! B is pretty much just a short pry bar, with a pivot in the middle. When you screw a threaded rod into A, it pushes against one end of B, bringing the other two ends towards each other. With the fork end of A anchored between the ball joint and the taper, the other end is left to push against the threaded end of the ball joint. The more you tighten the threaded rod, the tighter a compression you make, and voila...POP! It's undone!!!
A = part A
B = part B
= = threaded rod
x = pivot
* = fork
~ = pry end
+ = hex end of threaded rod
