I've _only_ done it with a floor jack and stands. It's really not hard...
The only thing is getting the ball joint apart, because there's not much clearance. I had to 'modify' my ball joint tool to fit. The trick is to undo the nut so that it's flush with the top of the bolt, then use the ball joint tool.
If you don't have a ball joint tool, don't even try; you'll just mess up the boot, and they're $50!
Putting it back together is also easy. NOTE: Use an open-ended wrench, not a box end, when doing up the ball joint nut (a one-time use nut!), or else you might end up with the wrench stuck on the car!!! ;-) Also, if the ball joint just turns as you try to tighten it up, put a small jack under it to put pressure into the taper. That'll stop it.
