Yes, it's true. Any thoughts on my coolant woes?

The belt should be replaced free of charge at 35k, 65k, and 95k miles. Yes, this is basically due to poor design on the engine. The original timing belt was supposed to last 90,000miles. It did not and there were many failures; hence, the shortened interval. But wait, there's more. The KEY to making it work is that you cannot replace just the belt. You (Saab thru 95k) need to replace the entire timing belt assembly. This means the tensioner and the idler pulleys. The kit costs about $380-400 when you have to pay for it. I believe that the redesigned kit is supposed to be good for 60k and the belt for 30k, so I'm not sure if Saab will pay for both at 35/65/95k. But, some recent posts have suggested at possible idler pulley failures even with the kit, so if you value your engine, I would get the whole timing belt and pulley installed new at every 35k.

If the job is performed under warranty at a dealer as it should be, then there should be an electronic record for your VIN that any Saab dealer can access. Get a print out of what was done when. You need to be certain that you have the new, updated kit installed.

It's expensive to do this, but far more expensive if the timing system fails and you ruin the valves. Can you say valve job, new heads, or new engine to the tune of $3000+?

There are numerous posts on this; I have to recommend searching the archives. You need not go back before 2003.
