It might not be the heater core per see, but an O-ring. Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Head gasket, heater core, or have dealer diagnose?, Derek in Durham, Thu, 3 Jul 2003 06:35:57 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The catch though is that when the heater core is out, it's still difficult to determine if the core was leaking or just the two o-rings where the two pipes enter the core.
Actually, if you see green coolant crust inside the fins of heater core or at end tanks, you can be pretty sure it's the core.
But if the crust is only around the two fittings for the tubes, it might be only the O-rings.
It's kind of a crappy design, where the two brass tubes doesn't go deep enough into the heater core and it leaves the o-rings dangling almost on the edge. The tubes and core is held together with a flimsy plastic snap lock device which allow the tubes to move a little bit back and forth in the core.
So if someone is brutal when replacing the two heater hoses on the outside of fire wall, it is a chance that the pipes moves around in the core and starts to leak.
