Thanks a lot, Anders. I appreciate the info. As this is kind of a mystery problem I'm not surprised that few people have comments to post.
The heater hose was replaced by the dealer around 115k and 1.5-2 years ago when my father still owned the car. Hopefully they didn't rough up the o-rings but who knows? I'm not sure why the hose was replaced. He had a similar coolant leak for a while too, but that was, in fact, the head gasket at that time. (Dealer diagnosed at 125k; we confirmed minor HG damage when disassembled.) We thought (and I still hope) the HG was due to some overheating when the upper radiator hose blew in 90+ heat on the freeway.
But obviously, I'm a little paranoid about the HG since with my current leak since (1)I haven't found any coolant and (2)in case there was some OTHER mystery coolant leak (warped head?) that we didn't know about when we did the repair.
I just ordered the Saab climate control/ACC manual so that I will have some guidance on what I'm getting into. I will try real hard next week to see if I can't find coolant somewhere or to get near the heater core. If that doesn't pan out, then I will pay the dealer to check it out. I will keep you all updated....
Thanks,
