And have them check for fault codes. Did the transmission go up in smoke or is it just having problems with some gears?
It might only be a shift solenoid that is acting up, and those can be replaced independantly.
But the easiest way for a shop is to tell the customer they need a whole new transmission.
I haven't seen one of the NG900 automatic go totally bad yet, and I have seen quite a few. But I have replaced some solenoids.
To be politically correct, only the 1996 tranny fits. It might be possible to mount a 97-98 in there, but I can't promise and you might end up with the transmission check light if the tranny and computer don't like each other.
