Afraid the friction material is gone. Started off okay but began slipping within a mile. Car would rev up but not go very fast and would not climb a steep hill. Would shift up through at least the first three gears on the level but slipping the whole time. Fluid was a dirty brown color. Flushed the fluid and drove it. Drove okay initially but began slipping as soon as it warmed up. Ended up getting home in three stages having to wait for transmission to cool as it lost all motive power on hills. Check gear box light did not come on till after it quit motivating. Car was fine the night before and hadn't been driven in 3 weeks before that. No sign of any impending problem except a single clunky shift from first to second the night before. There is a low volume whirring noise coming from the trans area but no clunking or other bad gear noise.
Aloha
