Very nice. I just reinforced mine tonight using the kit shown at http://www.genuinesaab.com. It cost me less than $10US at the dealer and took about four hours, including a trip to the hw store for a drill bit. I think tomorrow I'll add a strap like you described so the latch can't slip out (with all of my efforts, it's still a little bent out of shape).
A caveat: Unless the problem started very recently, I strongly recommend removing the motor from the panel and inspecting the damage. You may need to throw it on a table vice with some heavy duty pliers and/or pick some metal shavings from the gears. It's not fun, but as long as your already in there it seems worth it to me. (I had little choice - mine required heroic measures to avoid shelling out for a replacement).
