I hit something on the road and things went south ...

Driving in NYC, I felt a slight impact and then heard/felt something dragging under the car. The sound went away after a couple of blocks - when I pulled over, there was a sweet-smelling smoke (which came and then went quickly), but I found nothing under the car. When I started the car back up, it felt like the power steering had gone - I had to really strongarm the wheel. And then the battery warning light came on and stayed on.
I parked it now and will take to the mechanic tomorrow. Is it possible I hit something on the road and it ripped a hose or two loose? What does the battery light indicate (besides what it says in the manual - no power to alternator from battery)? Or perhaps what I felt was something going in the engine. I checked my power steering fluid and it's fine. It's dark now, so I could see very little but all else seemed normal.
Any ideas on what could have happened?
Thanks.
Steve
