97 900 SET battery light on, no other problems...

Today I had the battery light on my 97 900 SE Turbo come on and stay on with the warning light flashing on intermittently. Out of the blue, no prior problems. And I was able to start the car twice with no resistance after it had been sitting at work for the afternoon. I called the dealer and they said I'd be ok to drive it straight there. I did that and didn't have any problems (sluggishness, killing, or high engine temp even though it's a hot day here) along the way. But left it with the dealer anyway.
I'm wondering if this sounds like a plain old dying battery, or an alternator problem, or a gremlin. The only other think I've noticed (and been meaning to call service about) recently, is a bit of spluttering on humid days, of which we have many right now. Nothing severe, and mostly at lower (10-30 MPH) speeds and when doing a slow acceleration vs. kicking in the turbo. This has been going on for about the past 6 weeks. I know, shame on me for not getting it in right away. Thoughts I had on that were spark plugs or ignition wires, and alternator was suggested by a friend.
Any info would be appreciated in order to avoid getting hosed by the dealer. Thanks!
