TDC usually refers to the piston in cylinder #1 being at top dead center. This is also specific to either the intake stroke or the compression stroke (not sure which for this engine). If you're wrong on the stroke, the engine will be 180degrees off and will not run. On most engines there is a mark on the crankshaft pulley that aligns with a mark on the block when #1 is at TDC.
BTW, I think points are a pain, I believe that this is one area where manufacturers have greatly improved engines. I've even converted my 68 Firebird to electronic iginition and it runs much better and doesn't need constant dwell and timing adjustments. Believe me, troubleshooting points and dwell issues can leave you pulling your hair out.
