What was/is the nature of the idle problem? My 5-spd 96 900S had an idle problem with the A/C on when I first got the car new. When completely stopped, and the A/C switch on, but the compressor cycled OFF, the idle would go up a few hundred RPM, then drop down again and then back up again continuously. Once the compressor cycled back on, it would idle steadily. It only did this when the car was not moving, particuarly when coming to a stoplight, etc. This was diagnosed at the dealership, and escalated to Sweden (this was back in 1996), and eventually a new Motronic computer, with updated software was installed which fixed the problem.
I'm not too familiar with how the ICE works, but it would stand to reason that if other features that rely on the timing services of the ICE still work, it might not be the place to start. ICE controls things like intermittent wiper timing (front and rear), interior courtesy light delay, turn signal and hazard light flashing, central locking (but not necessarily the theft alarm) by controlling the max number of lock/unlock operations per minute, and also prevents people from burning out the lock actuators by holding down the lock switch. But yes, the cooling fans are controlled by the ICE. I don't believe in browsing this message forum, I've ever come across a post that told about a defective or malfunctioning ICE though.
Lemme know how it turns out, it'd be interesting to see how closely the failures on our cars are.
