The CEL is probably on because the oxygen sensor is not working. This is also why the tailpipe is sooty--the engine is running waaaay too rich.
A/C won't be cheap to fix--usually what happens is the low pressure hose rubs against the body for a few thousand miles, a hole gets worn in the hose and the refrigerant dumps. Depending upon how long the system's been empty, you could be looking at a new compressor, hoses and a recharge. That ain't cheap (around $1500--and this quote is from my indie, who is super reasonable). It's a common problem--the system in my Saab's been dry for almost 3 years, but then, I could count on one hand the times I used the A/C before it gave it up.
The washer issue could be the pump. Hint--when you try the washers, do you hear the pump running?? If so, it's a check valve. If not, then it's the pump. We found out the hard way that Saab uses at least two different vendors for washer pumps (the one on my '95 SEt failed at 200K). My Saab had a Nippondenso, but Delco pumps were also used. And, the Nippondensos had been superseded by another style. My mechanic had to modify the pump to make it run in my Saab.
Sport exhausts are lounder than stock. Especially if all of the insulation in the muffler itself is blown out (as has happened in mine. It's OK, though---I really like the way she sounds. Sort of a "get out of my way you over decorated Honda" sound!)
The clunking front end could well be the struts, strut upper plates or a broken spring.
I'm more than a little concerned about the seller. DIY is OK as long as you know what you're doing and are faithful about the maintenance. How long has the CEL been on?? And, if it keeps coming on, and the guy keeps driving it........well, the light comes on for a reason. Find the problem and fix it!!
The miles may be good and the price may be right, but the maintenance is shaky, Curt. A not well maintained SEt can eat you out of house and home quickly. My advice would be to look for a better maintained example. I got really lucky--my '95 only had 19K on her when she came to live with me nearly 6 years ago--she has almost 221K on her now and has been a joy to drive and easy on my wallet.
Good luck!!
