My '96 behaves the same way. I got used to it after a while, but explaining it to other people who drive the car is a pain. The linkage was upgraded in '97 and changing to this newer version might fix the problem. It's fairly expensive if you have it done at the dealer.
I'm not sure why it behaves like this. The angle of the engine might be different when running vs not running. To get reverse, I usually have to start in 1st and then move directly to reverse to get it to go. Don't force it in, you'll just make the already sloppy linkage worse. Sometimes you can get close enough to take the key out without actually being in reverse. When I had my indy mechanic look at this problem he said it's just a poor design and there was nothing he could do except upgrade to the newer version linkage.
