Hokay. The gearboxes in the NG can be problematic. It's usually the early NG gearboxes (1994-1995)that tend to crap out early. A lot depends on how your car was driven by its previous owner. If he ran it like he was travelling down the inner ring at Rheims, then you gots problems. Just an FYI, there's no need for maintenance on the 5 speed---the oil in the box stays there until and unless you have to replace or rebuild. It could be that you're not completely engaging the clutch. Is the clutch original? It may begining to wear. It could be the slope of the hill on which you have parked. Or, it could be the reverse gear sychro letting go (worst case scenario here). The early NG box was famous for losing reverse at an early age (my '95 SEt lost hers at 39K).The problem was that even when the box was in reverse, it wasn't in reverse all the way, and the synchro got chewed up. Saab quietly fixed that problem as more cars rolled out of Trollhattan (or, in your Saab's case, Nystaad) so that by 1996, this problem more or less went away. In my Saab's case, when the (lousy rotten) dealer replaced reverse synchro, even though I complained about a crunchy reverse eynchro, they didn't replace it until Saab made them at 64K. (They actually made them replace ALL of the synchros, gratis). It was all for naught tho at 90K--the pinion shaft snapped at 5th gear and the gearbox grenaded. Saab bought us a reman box and it's been fine since then (my 900 has almost 223K on her now).
Good luck!!
